Baliwalla & Homi's optical roots were planted in 1899, when Naoroji Jehangir Baliwalla together with his brother Phirojsha, opened a humble Optical Shop in Kalbadevi, Bombay. Phirojsha, a skilled craftsman who handcrafted solid gold frames, which were fitted with flat imported lenses, were sold for half a gold guinea in those days (approximately 15 rupees).
In 1913, Naoroji's son, also Phirojsha, formed a partnership with Homi Guzder giving birth to Baliwalla & Homi, which went on to become a Private Limited company in 1940.
Our flagship store was opened in Fort in 1916 followed by two more branches in Parel (1919) and Dhobi Talao (1928), in addition to a lens grinding workshop. In the 1950’s they began manufacturing ophthalmic instruments.
From 1950 to 2006 the late Naval P. Baliwalla steered the company to greater heights and earned the reputation of being one of India's leading Optometrists. He was ably supported by his business partner the late Rattan S. Surveyor. Their legacy is now carried forward by Anahita Dastur, Zarir & Hormuz Baliwalla.
